Pescara Half Marathon - Maratonina del Mare

The Pescara Half Marathon, known locally as the Maratonina del Mare, is a 21.0975 km road race held in Pescara on Italy's Adriatic coast. It takes place in May, forming part of the larger Maratona di Pescara event, organized by ASD RUN4FUN. The race follows a certified city course and is listed on the Italian national calendar, welcoming male and female participants in junior, senior, promesse, and master categories. The course begins at Piazza della Rinascita, on via Nicola Fabrizi near Piazza Salotto, heading south towards the seafront. Participants will run along Lungomare Matteotti, cross the Ponte del Mare, and proceed down the southern waterfront roads to a turnaround point in Francavilla al Mare, close to viale Alcione. The route then returns north, crossing the Ponte del Mare again. It continues along Viale della Riviera and Viale Aldo Moro before a second turnaround near the Brigantino and Voglia di Mare beach establishments. Personal touches for participants include the option to engrave medals with their name and race time, and to add their name to the back of the race shirt.

Nova Eroica Gran Sasso

Nova Eroica Gran Sasso begins in Castel del Monte, Abruzzo, within Gran Sasso National Park, as part of the Eroica cycling series. It is an all-road, gravel-focused ride designed for modern bicycles, with early summer routes leading participants through the high valleys and plateaus of the central Apennines. The route choices span from 60 km to 137 km, featuring ascents from 1,100 m to 2,730 m. Participants may select the all-asphalt Giro del Gran Sasso, gravel-only paths crossing the national park and five villages, or the Rocca di Calascio route, offering perspectives of Italy's tallest ancient fortress. The unpaved sections follow historic tratturi, ancient pathways for seasonal sheep migration. Beyond the cycling, the event features a festival and a Cena Eroica dinner, continuing the Eroica tradition of fostering a weekend community atmosphere rather than a simple race.

Campionato Italiano Triathlon Olimpico Assoluto ed Age Group - Alba Adriatica

The Campionato Italiano Triathlon Olimpico Assoluto ed Age Group is an Olympic-distance triathlon held in Alba Adriatica, located on Italy’s Adriatic coast in the province of Teramo. This event is part of the Italian Triathlon Championship and is administered by FITRI, the Italian triathlon federation, featuring competitions for both elite Absolute athletes and Age Group participants. The format follows the standard Olympic triathlon structure: a swim, a bike leg, and a run, with national titles at stake, distinguishing it from a casual open-entry seaside race. Alba Adriatica’s coastal setting hosts this championship, bringing together Italy’s top professional racers and amateur age-group athletes during the same championship weekend.

About cycling & running in Pescara

Pescara Coastal Base Miles

Running: Pescara gives runners a flat coastal base at 0 m, with the River Aterno-Pescara splitting the city and the seafront doing the easy work. Locals run the coastal strip, the river valley, Villa Sabucchi, and Pineta Dannunziana when they want shade and steady Z2. The river valley works for intervals, with a 1 km warm-up, 4-6x 400m/800m intervals, 200m jogging recoveries, and a 1 km cool-down. Anchor races keep the calendar honest, with Pescara Half Marathon, Maratonina del Mare - Pescara Half Marathon, La Michettiana Running, and Notturna di Guardiagrele.

Cycling: Pescara is a friendly city for cyclists, especially when you start from the historic center, pass Villa Sabucchi, and roll to the seafront. Locals use the Ciclopolitana idea and the seaside cycle paths for base miles, coffee spins, and easy group pace. The 15 km city route leaves the center on Via Castellammare Adriatico, skirts the Santa Filomena pinewood nature reserve, and returns south along the seafront to Ponte del Mare. The bike path crosses the Saline River and reaches Silvi Marina, while the push to Pineto gives roughly 22 km. The climbs sit west, with Maiella, Gran Sasso, La Michettiana - Mediofondo d'Abruzzo, Nova Eroica Gran Sasso, Pescara I, Pescara II, and Pescara III in the mix.

Season: Spring and autumn are the best months here, because the racing rhythm lands well and the weather lets runners and cyclists stack quality without fighting the day. Summer stays mostly stable and sunny, and July averages around 25°C, so locals move intervals early, keep Z2 by the sea, and save longer rides for the cooler edges. August can be as wet as February, but the coast still feels like the anchor. Winter brings cool air around 7°C in January, and the mountains change conditions fast. Snow from Siberia hits every 3-4 years, while foehn wind can suddenly lift the temperature for a surprise training window.
