Tāmaki River Half Marathon

Point England Road marks the start, with the route leading onto the eastern waterfront and following the Tāmaki River. The Tāmaki River Half Marathon is part of the Run21 Series of "Coastal Half Marathons." Its appeal is straightforward: road running alongside the "stunning inland coastline of the Tāmaki River" with minimal complication. The course begins and ends at Point England, offering the practical out-and-back structure of a known starting and finishing point. Walkers, run/walkers, recreational runners, newer runners, and those preparing for longer road races are accommodated with staggered starts instead of a single mass start. The course includes road, path, and park sections, with the choice at the finish line: compete seriously or use it as a focused training run with a predictable end.

Rage Against Riverhead Trail Run

Rage Against Riverhead is a timed trail run held at the big red shed within Riverhead Forest, located on the outskirts of Auckland. Participants select either an 8, 12, or 24-hour duration, aiming to complete as many 5km laps as possible before their time expires. The event accommodates solo runners or relay teams of 2, 4, or 6 individuals. The course winds through a commercial pine forest, primarily utilizing smooth single trails and broader dirt paths, with a minimal 50-meter section of gravel road. Each lap accumulates approximately 60 meters of elevation gain, making the race challenging yet runnable. Relay teams operate with one runner on the course at a time, and the route passes the central tent area, facilitating handovers directly in front of each team's tent. Lactic Turkey Events is the organizer, with the event headquarters situated near the intersection of Barlow and Ararimu Valley Roads.

About cycling & running in Auckland

Auckland Training Notes

Running: Locals run Auckland like a set of linked playgrounds, with Tamaki Drive handling flat Z2 and long steady work from downtown to St Heliers. Mount Eden climbs 5km while gaining about 240m across road, path, and trail. 445 RUN CLUB, Auckland Joggers Club, Balance Run Club, NARC, and The Y Marathon Club keep the week moving. Runaway Auckland Marathon, Tāmaki River Half Marathon, Onehunga Half Marathon, and Step Up Sky Tower Challenge give the calendar its anchors.

Cycling: Locals ride everything from waterfront paths to proper gravel days. The Northwestern cycleway stays relatively flat, and Westhaven Path, City to Bays path, Devonport to Takapuna path, and Pakuranga Rotary Path are easy spins when base miles matter. Port Waikato sits an hour from the CBD, and its gravel roads hit 130km with 2,638m gain, so that is not a soft day. Puhoi Loop, Riverhead-Muriwai Loop, Whangaripo Loop, and Big Coast Loop bring the climbs, with Muriwai adding that bush trail climb feel. Bike Auckland, Bike Burbs, Auckland Mountain Bike Club, Grey Lynn Cycle Club, and North Harbour Cycling Club keep the crit, MTB, and gran fondo crowd connected.

Season: Summer suits Auckland best, with warm days, February sea temperature, and early morning calm on the isthmus during settled weather. Locals start early because the sea breeze often begins in the morning and dies down in the evening. Runners use Tamaki Drive, Westhaven Marina, and Ōrākei Basin for controlled work, while riders take the flat paths before chasing hills out west or south-east. Winter stays mild, but the sea is coolest in August and the Waitākere Ranges can turn muddy, rooty, and technical. The season still works for Z2, cyclocross legs, bush running, and singletrack if you dress right.
