Windsor Trail Run Half Marathon & 10K August

The Windsor Trail Run Half Marathon & 10K in August guides participants along the paths of Alexandra Gardens in Windsor, Berkshire, with Windsor Castle in view. Two races are available: a 10K that begins in the morning, followed shortly by a half marathon. This setup accommodates both those seeking a shorter trail run and individuals prepared for 13.1 miles. The course is flat, utilizing park paths instead of challenging terrain. This design makes it accessible for less experienced runners, while still providing a fast, consistent route for seasoned athletes. The location is a key feature: Alexandra Gardens places the race near the Thames-side center of Windsor, and the castle's presence lends the event a unique local character.

Royal Windsor Triathlon Presented by Sigma Sports June

The Royal Windsor Triathlon begins in the River Thames and sends athletes past royal landmarks in Windsor, Berkshire, each June. It is a mass-participation triathlon with sprint, Olympic-distance, and relay options. The sprint race uses a 750-metre swim, 22-kilometre bike leg, and 5-kilometre run. The Olympic race doubles the swim to 1,500 metres, stretches the bike to 40 kilometres, and finishes with a 10-kilometre run. Around 3,000 to 3,500 competitors usually enter, including club racers, first-timers, relay teams, and experienced triathletes on the same morning. The swim is an out-and-back route on the Thames, starting near Queen Elizabeth Bridge and passing Baths Island. The bike course uses open roads through Windsor and the Berkshire countryside, with Windsor Castle on the route. The run moves into Windsor Great Park and along the Long Walk, where the castle remains in view. The race began in 1991 and is among the UK’s longest-running triathlons, with seven British Triathlon Federation “Event of the Year” awards. Its start lists have also included famous names from outside triathlon, such as Jonny Wilkinson, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Gareth Thomas, Jenson Button, and Princess Beatrice of York.

About cycling & running in Slough

Slough Base Miles

Running: Locals get plenty done from Upton Court park, especially on the Upton Court parkrun course. The course is almost completely flat and consists of two laps, so it suits steady Z2, sharp intervals, and a tidy Saturday hit-out. Underfoot is approximately two-thirds grass and a third tarmac, and the grass underfoot is lovely to run on. Runners get a fantastic view of Windsor Castle in the distance and a few twisty corners near the end. GoodGym Slough meets every Monday from Salt Hill Activity Centre, and runners run back all within 90 minutes. Jubilee River Races and UK Ekiden give the town proper anchor events.

Cycling: Slough Cycling Club gives locals a clear home base, with over 50 members and Sunday Club rides for riders comfortable at at least 40 miles. The club rides at around 14 mph, and the vibe is strictly no-drop, so no one gets left behind. National Cycle Route 61 passes through town, and the borough works well for base miles because most of it sits within a 20 minute ride of the town centre. Riders use the flat lanes for tempo, tri prep, and gran fondo legs. The climbs sit away from town toward High Wycombe, while Windsor, Maidenhead, and Reading keep longer days honest.

Season: July suits Slough best, because this part of the Thames Valley often gets the warmest daytime summer temperatures in the British Isles. Summer afternoons can hit 30°C, so locals start earlier, carry drink, and keep Z2 honest before the heat builds. Summer runners lean on Upton Court park, the Thames path, and the Jubilee River, while cyclists stretch out toward Windsor and beyond. Winter changes the feel more than the map, with grass getting softer, tarmac becoming the safer call, and club miles turning steadier. Rainfall stays low compared with most of the British Isles, but 105 days still report over 1 mm of rain.
