Bismarck Marathon Half Marathon 10k & Relay

The Fargo Marathon is a flat, fast road marathon in Fargo, North Dakota. The race weekend also includes a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and relay options. Most years, runners start and finish inside the Fargodome. The marathon course is USATF-certified, so marathon times can count toward Boston qualifying. The event has run since the mid-2000s, growing from a first weekend of roughly 3,000 runners into a larger regional race drawing participants from across the United States and beyond. The course extends beyond Fargo into Moorhead, Minnesota, crossing the Red River area between the two cities. Its character comes from noise and local flavor: dozens of bands play along the route, with rock, dance music, oldies, Native drumming, and polka all part of the mix. Early editions featured a pasta and lefse pre-race feed, charity fundraising, and decorated life-size buffalo sculptures placed along the marathon course. Mark Knutson founded and directed the race, and the weekend later added a pre-race convention with food, local businesses, and speakers for runners and spectators.

About cycling & running in Bismarck

Bismarck River Miles

Running: Locals run Bismarck from the parks first, then stitch the miles together along the Missouri River. The Bismarck-Mandan Paved Trail System handles easy Z2 days, while Sertoma Park, Riverside Park, Pioneer Park, and Sunset Park keep the dirt close. Pioneer Park gives runners up to 7 miles of varied elevation near the river. The loop covers 2 km and gains 21 m, so it works for quick intervals. The Bismarck Marathon anchors the calendar, and its course parallels the Missouri River before starting and finishing at the North Dakota Capitol Grounds. Local race days also include Dirt Kicker, Coulee Trail Classic, Through the Smoke, and Mandan Rodeo Days.

Cycling: Locals ride the same park spine, then push out for gravel, crit legs, and singletrack. The Bismarck-Mandan Paved Trail System works for base miles, while Missouri River State Natural Area, Sleepy Hollow, Pioneer Park, and Sunset Park handle dirt. Sleepy Hollow packs exposed prairie, short climbs, fun descents, and tight turns through wooded hollows into a 4-mile loop. Sunset Park gives intermediate and expert riders 4 miles of prairie trail with technical sections. Capitol City Crit brings the short-course sting, while The AlKEMist Gravel Fest, Lyons-Heart Gravel Classic, Otter Creek, and BISMAN Triathlon carry the bigger anchor-event feel. The climbs hide in coulees, wooded hollows, and rolling gravel, not mountains.

Season: 5°C. Summer gives runners and riders warm, humid air, long park-path evenings, and thunderstorms, with precipitation peaking from May to September. Locals use that stretch for marathon build, gran fondo miles, gravel blocks, and cyclocross fitness before the wind turns sharper. Winter averages 1°C, the snow stays light to moderate, and the wind makes Z2 feel honest. The Missouri River State Natural Area still suits quick ski laps or casual rides when conditions line up, and the city keeps the park habit alive.
