Fall Into Green

Fall Into Green was a unique Cheyenne running event, established when the 11th Spring into Green race was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It featured 5K and 10K races starting at 8:00 a.m. from Holliday Park, located at Morrie and Lincolnway. Runners started in waves of approximately 20 to 25 participants. Chip timing was employed for all runners, with results published by the Cheyenne Greenway Foundation. Medals were sent by mail, differing from the typical race-day distribution. The race route showcased the Sun Valley segment of the Greater Cheyenne Greenway, maintaining a strong connection to the trail system it benefited. Funds raised were reinvested into Greenway improvements, including bike repair stations, water fountains, and public art installations. Awards were presented for the 5K and 10K events across male and female categories, seniors aged 60 and older, and young boys and girls, positioning it as a community fundraiser accommodating competitive runners, families, and regular Greenway users.

Cheyenne Sunrise Lions Greenway (Tour de Donut) and Ride for Sight (Rural Ride)

The Cheyenne Sunrise Lions Greenway Tour de Donut and Ride for Sight combine two Cheyenne bike rides on consecutive days in early August. The first is a 6-mile family ride starting at Cahill Park, located at Del Range Boulevard and Friendship Circle. It has a $25 family registration fee and follows a casual out-and-back route on Cheyenne's Greenway. The second is a 100 km rural ride beginning at WYDOT, 5300 Bishop Boulevard, utilizing an out-and-back course with aid stations. The Greenway ride maintains a relaxed atmosphere with donut stops, route surprises, and a playful Tour de Donut theme; one year featured a Safari concept with animal jokes. Restrooms are accessible at the Cahill Park start but not along the Greenway course, requiring riders to prepare. The 100 km Ride for Sight offers a longer distance, divided into age categories from younger participants up to 65+, and includes a complimentary lunch with food choices upon return. The Cheyenne Sunrise Lions Club and Black Hills Energy sponsor the event.

About cycling & running in Cheyenne

Cheyenne Base Miles

Running: Locals get a lot done on the Cheyenne Greenway because it goes all over town and stays pretty flat in most places. The Greenway gives more than 30 miles of paths through parks and neighborhoods, with bridges and underpasses keeping the rhythm easy. Lions Park gives you a 1-mile lake lap when you want simple repeats. Holliday Park gives you a half-mile path around the little lake for short intervals. Cheyenne Running Club keeps the scene moving with Rise & Shine runs, Shoes Cruise to Booze, GPS Art Run, and spring training at Cahill Park. Cheyenne Firecracker 5K/10K and Cheyenne Marathon anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride the same flat city fabric for Z2, then point west when the legs need work. Cheyenne Greenway and Airport Parkway handle easy spins, warmups, and family pace. Cheyenne Slow Roll brings a summer Wednesday ride that usually covers 5 miles and sometimes stretches to 8 miles. Curt Gowdy State Park gives easier gravel and Rowdy Gowdy energy. Pole Mountain and Vedauwoo bring the tougher gravel adventure, especially from Happy Jack Rd all the way to Vedauwoo. The route to Vedauwoo covers 5 km with 1,122 m of gain. The second segment covers 2 km with 2,436 m of gain.

Season: September, October, April, and May usually feel like the best training months because the air sits better for longer base miles. Cheyenne sits at 1,122 m, so steady pacing matters when you are new in town. Even at 1°C the city still gives warm afternoons for a crit-style workout or a gran fondo build. Lions Park adds summer paddle boats after the run if you are keeping it social. Winter changes the plan with cold, wind, and dry roads between storms. Chinook days can lift December to February highs above 10°C and open a surprise Z2 window.
