Burton Race Series

The Burton Race Series connects the Hot Fudge 5K Run & Walk, the City of Burton Memorial Day 5K Run & Walk, and the Veterans Honor Run in Burton, Michigan. This series is run by volunteers. Each event has its own registration fee, and there's no additional cost to be included in the series standings. Runners and walkers participating in all three events are series participants. The schedule includes a winter Hot Fudge race, a Memorial Day 5K, and a veterans-themed run later in the year. A virtual participation option is available for those unable to attend one of the in-person races. Those who complete all three events receive a special Burton Race Series medal at a December after-party. The series also contributes to local community projects and fundraising efforts.

Mott Lake Trail Run (3Mile | 5Mile | 12.5K)

The Mott Lake Trail Run begins and ends at Bluebell Beach in Flint, Michigan, offering three distances: a 3 Mile run/walk, a 5 Mile run, and a 12.5K run. The event takes place on a Saturday morning in early September. The longest distance starts first, with the shorter races beginning a few minutes later. It is a chip-timed trail and path event, but the majority of the surface is paved, making it suitable for runners seeking a firm surface while still enjoying the lake and woods. The course winds through the Flint River Trail area, passing Mott Lake and Stepping Stone Falls. It combines lakeside sections, wooded paths, and smooth pavement with only minor elevation changes. The 3 Mile course is entirely on paved trail. The 5 Mile course is fully paved, including a brief section on Branch Road marked with cones. The 12.5K is mostly paved, incorporating Branch Road and James Basset Drive. The route is marked with signs, cones, and field paint, and potential trip hazards are identified. The 3 Mile is ideal for beginners and walkers, the 5 Mile offers a mid-range option for runners, and the 12.5K serves as good preparation for fall races. Registration includes a Dri-Fit shirt, a finisher medal, race photos, awards, and post-race refreshments. The event benefits the Trecho Fitness Foundation, supporting fitness programs and scholarships for underserved youth and individuals impacted by substance abuse or trauma.

HAP Crim Festival of Races

The HAP Crim Festival of Races guides runners through Flint, Michigan, with a blue line marking the route and Bradley Hills on the 10-mile course. Held annually in August since 1977, it is a road-running festival centered on the 10-mile race known as The Crim. Other events include a 5K, a 5 Mile, the Michigan Mile Series, the Teddy Bear Trot, and the Lois Craig Invitational Special Olympics Race. Bobby Crim and Lois Craig established the race as a Special Olympics fundraiser. The inaugural event had 707 runners and raised $30,170. The festival continues to support Area 13 Special Olympics, attracts approximately 50,000 spectators yearly, and draws participants from countries such as Kenya, Russia, and Ukraine. Its past includes two stints as the U.S. national 10-mile championship, Friday-night mile races around the University of Michigan-Flint, and recent course adjustments incorporating Chevy Commons and the Mott Park neighborhood.

About cycling & running in Flint

Flint Training Notes

Running: Locals build most running weeks around the Flint River Trail, because it starts near downtown Flint and runs along the Flint River toward Bluebell Beach and Stepping Stone Falls. Mott Park gives easy base miles, and the classic 4 miler route has pavement, dirt, and a relatively flat feel. Greater Flint Athletic Club keeps the week social with runners, riders, walkers, and year-round events. The Crim Festival of Races is the anchor event, and the Crim 10 Mile still feels best when Saginaw Street shows up late.

Cycling: Locals ride Flint as a mix of path miles, gravel, and practical city connectors. The city has a 7-mile bike trail for quick spins. Team Consolidated Cycling carries the race-minded crowd, and gravel riding makes up a majority of the club's activities. The area has 9 miles of gravel roads. The south and east have rolling terrain, and the northwest is flat.

Season: May through October gives Flint its best training block for both running and riding. July brings a monthly daily mean of 22.3°C, and summer gives warm miles with temperatures exceeding 30°C on 9.0 days annually. Locals use those months for intervals on paved loops, long trail runs to Mott Lake, and gravel base miles before fall race season. Winter changes the rhythm hard, because January sits at a monthly daily mean of -5.3°C. Runners keep moving through cold days, and cyclists shift toward shorter rides, hardy path miles, or indoor work.
