Nā Holo Wāhine is a 5K run and walk held at the University of Hawai‘i Maui College in Kahului. It begins early in the morning and is open to all participants. The event supports the UH Maui College scholarship fund, honoring Kelly Watanabe, a runner, educator, wellness advocate, and community volunteer with strong connections to the college and the Maui running scene. About cycling & running in Kahului-Wailuku

Kahului-Wailuku Coastal Base Miles

Running: Locals run Kahului-Wailuku for coastal rhythm, valley shade, and honest climbs. The route climbs 42 m before giving the same back. The route covers 20 km and gains 272 m, so marathon legs get plenty of steady work. The route runs 3 km and drops more than it climbs, so locals save it for big days. Valley Isle Road Runners keeps the race calendar moving with Nā Holo Wāhine 5k Run, Iao Valley 5K & 10K, Hana Relay, and Maui Oceanfront Marathon.

Cycling: Locals ride from flat path spin to full mountain test without leaving the island mindset. The 7-mile mostly-flat path works for easy Z2 and recovery. The Mokulele Bike Path tracks the Mokulele Highway between Hansen Road and the Piilani Highway, while the South Maui Greenway stays under a mile. The Lahaina to Kapalua route runs about 25 miles, and the Polo Beach to Ahihi Kinaui route runs about 10 miles. Maui Bicycling League is the club name to know. Haleakala owns the climbing, and Cycle to the Sun is the anchor event.

Season: Locals treat May, July, September, and January as the race-calendar spine here. Na Holo Wahine 5k Run/Walk lands on May 10, 2026, at 7 a.m. at University of Hawai'i - Maui College, Kahului. The Iao Valley 5K & 10K hits July 19, 2026, with 600 feet of gain and descent from Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot Market Street up to Iao Valley State Park. Summer riding rewards early starts, because the Polo Beach to Ahihi Kinaui route is best ridden in the morning before the trade winds kick up. Winter puts Maui Oceanfront Marathon on January 17, 2027, so runners hold base miles and cyclists keep the climbs steady.
