The Land of Light 100k

The Land of Light 100k begins at Virgil Parris Preserve on Sodom Road in Buckfield, Maine, with racers departing at 9:00 am. This is not a straightforward trail ultramarathon: solo participants complete 100k by running 25k on trails and cycling 75k between land parcels. Two-person relay teams can divide the tasks as a duo. The event incorporates six distinct trail systems. The fully human-powered category prohibits e-bikes, meaning all movement between parcels relies on legs and pedals. The course starts with a 3k loop at Virgil Parris Preserve, then directs participants over Streaked Mountain into town before proceeding through trail sections at Roberts Farm Preserve, Noyes Mountain, Witt Swamp, Shepard's Farm, the Crooked River parcel, and Hawk Mountain. The running segments include a 5k loop at Roberts Farm, a steep 4k lollipop on Noyes Mountain, a rolling 8k lollipop through Witt Swamp and Shepard's Farm, and a 4-5k forest loop on the Crooked River parcel. Racers may use GPS and any open public road to reach the parcels; however, road travel is open, unsupported, and subject to normal traffic laws. Relay teams may switch riders or runners at any trailhead. The finish is located at an overlook on Hawk Mountain, offering a view south across Bear Pond. The course features artwork and statues along the way. The race supports TruStrength Tomorrow and the Western Foothill Land Trust of Maine, with proceeds directed to TruStrength Tomorrow, a nonprofit providing scholarships for local youth.

Trail Festival at Pineland Farms

The Trail Festival at Pineland Farms takes place on Memorial Day weekend at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine. All races are on unpaved trails. Saturday offers longer distances, and Sunday features shorter races. Participants can select from ultras, mid-distance trail races, a 10K, a 15K, a 5K, a Sunset 5K, and a 30-hour format for individuals or teams of 2, 4, or 6. With no prize money, the event emphasizes personal achievements, team efforts, dogs, and outdoor time over competitive prize purses. The longer races involve circuits through the farm’s fields and woods. The 25K, 50K, and 100K are one, two, or four circuits of a 14-mile course, respectively. The 30-hour ultra uses a 10K loop. The 50K is approximately 28 miles, a detail to note when comparing it to a standard 31-mile 50K. The 30-hour race evolved from a 24-hour format, allowing more time to aim for 100 miles. Reaching 100 miles within the cutoff earns a Trail Fest belt buckle; finishing under 24 hours earns a larger gold buckle. The festival also includes canicross and dog-human races on Sunday. The Sunset 5K starts after dark, requiring headlamps.

About cycling & running in Lewiston-Auburn

Lewiston-Auburn Training Notes

Running: Locals run the L-A Bridge Run line when they want downtown legs and a real Lewiston-Auburn feel. The city centre gives that 5K its shape as it weaves through downtown Lewiston and Auburn and closes the Greater L-A Triple Crown 5K Series. Lake Auburn Half Marathon & 5K starts 1 km from the city and works as the scenic anchor event. Waterbrook House Trail gives runners another named route. Minot Community Park Trails host the PRHS XC Alumni Race. Locals have no named run club in this brief, so the summer race calendar does the meet-up work.

Cycling: Locals ride with Maine Cycling Club when they want company, wheels, and regroup points. Maine Cycling Club runs a Monday 6:00 PM very easy pace, no drop ride from 46 Harriman Dr in Auburn. Maine Cycling Club runs a Wednesday 6:00 PM faster paced ride from the same Auburn start. Maine Cycling Club runs a Saturday 8:00 AM varied paced ride from Rainbow Bicycles in Lewiston. Lewiston has 18 cycling routes that total 252 km. The shortest route is 2 km with 159 m ascent. Elmwood Road routes are where the short, punchy climbing lives.

Season: Summer owns the rhythm here. The Greater LA Triple Crown 5K Series happens over the summer, and the Moxie Day 5K runs in summer too. Lake Auburn gives runners a clean half-marathon target, while Maine Cycling Club keeps Monday Z2, Wednesday faster work, and Saturday varied pace on the board. Winter shifts the feel for both sports because the brief gives no winter anchor race or ride series. Locals still have the same named routes, but the season turns the focus toward simple base miles, steady intervals, and whatever conditions allow.
