The Morro Bay Triathlon is an annual event in Morro Bay, California, held on a Sunday morning in early November. Participants can select between Sprint or Olympic distances. A unique option for those preferring to avoid an open-water swim is available: the bay leg can be completed by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. The race venue is modest in size, focusing on the waterfront near Coleman Drive, unlike a large urban course. The swim takes place in the sheltered Morro Bay Harbor. The bike course extends onto Highway 1, and the run route incorporates beach, boardwalk, trail, and pavement, concluding beneath Morro Rock. Competitors note the swim's potential difficulty, the bike leg's manageable challenge, and the added exertion of the sand run. Volunteers and the California Highway Patrol assist with traffic control on challenging bike segments, while spectators congregate near the swim exit. The finish area offers food and activities.
Running: Locals run downtown Paso Robles when they want flat base miles and a quiet predawn 10k. Oak Flat Road gives Wine Country Runners a steady 4 mile vineyard run. Santa Rita Creek and Moss Lane in Templeton work when the legs need calm Z2. San Luis Obispo runners link the Madonna bike trail, Meadow Park path, rail trail, and the SLO segment of the Bob Jones trail for town miles. Madonna Mountain Loop gives runsloclub about 5 miles on Saturdays or Wednesdays. Beer City Half, La Cuesta Ranch Trail Run, Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier Run, and Paso Robles Harvest Marathon keep the calendar honest.
Cycling: Locals ride SLO-Paso for rollers, ridges, and coffee turns. SLOBC members lead rides every day of the week, and the club puts on Wildflower and Lighthouse Century. SLO GRVL sends people toward TV Tower Rd, Poly Canyon, AT & T trail, and Cerro Alto’s greatest hits. The route covers 4 km of paved work with 1,641 meters of gain. Cuesta Grade, West Cuesta Ridge, East Cuesta Ridge, Prefumo Canyon, and Pine Mountain hold the climbs. Tour De Donut is the anchor event when the group wants a ride with a grin.
Season: Spring from March to May gives runners and cyclists the easiest rhythm, with mild air for intervals, long rides, and trail days. Fall from September to November brings harvest season, vineyard scenery, and that strong urge to keep running to blow off steam. Summer puts long daylight on the table, but inland Paso Robles and Templeton run warm, so locals slide harder work early and let Morro Bay, Cayucos, Pismo Beach, and Montaña De Oro cool things down. Winter stays mild and wet, and Big Falls to Lopez Canyon or other steep singletrack can turn muddy, technical, and better saved for the right day.
