Hometown Half Marathon & 5k/10k - Sioux Falls

The Fargo Marathon is a road-race weekend in Fargo, North Dakota, featuring a marathon as its main event, alongside a half marathon, 10K, and 5K. It has taken place annually since 2005. Most editions begin and end within the Fargodome, providing a stadium-like start and finish rather than a typical street setting. The marathon course is USATF-qualified, allowing runners to use eligible finish times for Boston Marathon qualification. The route crosses Fargo and extends into Moorhead, Minnesota, the city across the Red River. The event expanded significantly from its initial nearly 3,000 participants to a weekend that now attracts over 20,000, with the half marathon frequently being one of the most popular races. Founder Mark Knutson continued as race director after the event was acquired by Rugged Races. Local elements have consistently been a part of the weekend: early races featured a pasta-and-lefse meal and music from local bands, along with charitable giving. Subsequent events included numerous bands performing various genres, from rock and dance to Native drumming and polka. An early course even incorporated 39 decorated buffalo sculptures along the marathon path.

Cone Park Trail Fest

Cone Park Trail Fest is a mountain bike event listed on BikeReg, connected to the Nebraska Off-Road Races circuit. The season spans spring, summer, and early fall, featuring races in Nebraska and adjacent Iowa. This series collaborates with Trails Have Our Respect (THOR). The race formats are simple: short course races consist of laps under a mile, lasting approximately 20 minutes. Cross-country races use 3- to 7-mile laps, running for 30 to 90 minutes. Marathon races allow riders three hours to finish the most laps possible. The short course offers an accessible start for new riders, while experienced mountain bikers can progress to cross-country or marathon events.

Deer Dash Trail Races

The Deer Dash Trail Races are annual trail races at Oak Grove & Big Sioux Park in Hawarden, Iowa, offering 12-mile, 7.5-mile, and 3.5-mile options starting throughout the morning. Oak Grove is a 433-acre county park along the Big Sioux River, approximately one hour from Sioux Falls or Sioux City, drawing participants from both sides of the South Dakota-Iowa border. Entry to the park and parking are free. The park provides camping, cabins, restrooms, and showers for those wishing to extend their stay for the weekend. The race name originates from Debbie, a deer with one ear who resided in Oak Grove Park for years, acting as its unofficial mascot. The routes utilize park trails susceptible to flood zones; consequently, heavy rain may necessitate course modifications or cancellation. The event is included in the SFARC trail points series, featuring other locations like Camden, Big Sioux Rec, Newton Hills, Good Earth, and Mount Lucia. Runners earn points by age division, from first to tenth place. Awards are presented to the overall male and female winners, first and last, in each Deer Dash distance. The complete series also offers gift cards for top finishers and framed course photos for the overall champions.

About cycling & running in Sioux City

Sioux City Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Missouri River Trail and Riverfront Trail when they want easy Z2 miles along the water. The Riverfront Trail runs along the river, from Chataqua Park almost to the airport all the way to the Big Sioux River. Bacon Creek gives runners an almost 3-mile paved loop with some small hills, and Sgt. Bluff Rec Complex gives runners an about 1-mile paved loop. Floyd River Trail has about 3 miles of trails along the Floyd River. Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve has many miles of crushed limestone. Stone Park includes many miles of primarily dirt hiking trails. Missouri River Runners meet weekly, and Mighty Mo Run is the anchor event.

Cycling: Locals ride road, mountain bike, and gravel here without making it complicated. Siouxland Cyclists have been around since 1982, and the club organizes road cycling, mountain biking, and gravel riding. The Wednesday Warrior Ride and Thursday Night Bike Ride give riders steady group options for base miles or sharper intervals. Cone Park, Stone State Park, and Bacon Creek carry the singletrack, and club members help maintain those mountain bike trails. Talbot Rd has a popular route. Southern Hills Drive gives riders the local climbing. Cone Park Trail Fest feels like the anchor event.

Season: Spring and fall give Sioux City the best rhythm for both running and riding. Locals use those months for Shenanigans, Spring Thaw, Mighty Mo Run, Broken Toe Trail Run, Turkey Trot, Tulip Festival Road Race, Hometown Half Marathon, Prairie Series, Deer Dash Trail Races, Herb Anderson Hustle, Frozen Fun Run, Cone Park Trail Fest, and clean Z2 blocks. Summer brings Peak Performance Fitness Gear Summer Run Camp and steady heat, so runners and cyclists usually start early and stick to shaded river miles. Winter changes the plan fast. Missouri River Runners hold Saturday runs at Adams Nature Preserve when there is no snow, and riverfront trails become the backup when Adams has enough snow for cross country skiing.
