Tour of Southern Utah

The Tour of Southern Utah is a seven-day point-to-point cycling tour in southern Utah, based from St. George and held in September. Participants cover roughly 60 to 100 miles daily, making it suited for endurance cyclists seeking a full week of long road stages instead of a single-day event. The route connects major public-land areas: Zion, Bryce, and Capitol Reef national parks, along with Grand Staircase-Escalante and Cedar Breaks national monuments. Planet Ultra organizes the event, which includes eight nights of hotel lodging. Their events attract dedicated riders who prefer challenging days on the bike within a social, community-focused group.

Sand Hollow Triathlon

Red sandstone and reservoir water are adjacent to the racing at the Sand Hollow Triathlon, a mid-May multisport event held at Sand Hollow State Park in southern Utah. The event includes an Olympic triathlon (1500m swim, 20.7-mile bike, 6.2-mile run) and a Sprint triathlon (750m swim, 12.4-mile bike, 3.1-mile run). Participants can also choose a Sprint Duathlon or an Olympic Aquabike. The weather is typically warm and sunny, with cool mornings and race-day highs frequently between 60 and 90 degrees. The Olympic course is hilly and challenging, serving well for athletes preparing for longer races. The Sprint offers a shorter, quicker option suitable for newer triathletes or those seeking a more intense effort. A significant portion of the bike leg follows Sand Hollow Road, providing open views of the reservoir and surrounding red rock formations. Local competitors are already familiar with this location due to a Half distance triathlon held there earlier in the month; this event provides another opportunity to compete in the same southern Utah desert environment.

About cycling & running in St. George

St. George Training Notes

Running: St. George runners get base miles from the paved urban trails, the Virgin River, Santa Clara River, Pioneer Park, Tonaquint Nature Center, and the roads out toward Ivins and Santa Clara. Locals use Webb Hill to Dixie Drive for short efforts and Kayenta Loop when they want desert rhythm without drama. The St. George Marathon is the anchor event, and Vernon Worthen Park gets the finish-line buzz. George Running Club runs Track Workouts, Tempo Runs, and Long Runs from January to September. The Kayenta Loop is 00 km with 188 m of gain. The Kayenta Loop is 43 km with 215 m of gain. The St. George Marathon is the anchor event, and Vernon Worthen Park gets the finish-line buzz. Cycling: St. George riders split time between road, gravel, and singletrack because the climbing and dirt start right away. Locals use Kayenta for beginner road miles, Snow Canyon for the Ironman-course feel, City Loop for parkways, and Veyo Loop when the legs need a classic advanced route. Wasatch CX Team Camp brings the cyclocross crowd into the same terrain. The climbs here hit 780 m over 3 km. Turkey Farm, Apex Mine, Diamond Valley, Cove Wash, Zen, and Bearclaw Poppy keep gravel and MTB honest. Hoodoo 500 and Tour of Southern Utah are the big anchors.

Season: Spring and fall are the cleanest training windows, with March through May and September through November giving runners and riders the best shot at steady Z2, intervals, and long weekends. St. George sits below 900 meters, so summer gets real early. Average highs run over 32°C from late April to early October, and July sits around 37°C. Locals move long runs, gravel rides, and Snow Canyon repeats to early morning, and Turkey Farm gravel is a past-10 AM bad idea in summer. Winter stays mild, but December lows average around 1°C and nighttime freezes change starts, layers, and shady corners.
