Run the Runway

Run the Runway takes participants onto the newly renovated tarmac at Midland Airpark in Midland, Texas, rather than city streets or park paths. ConocoPhillips presents this annual event, which features a chip-timed 5K with age-division scoring and a 1-mile fun run. This setup allows families, walkers, aviation enthusiasts, and competitive local runners to participate on the airport grounds. The course utilizes airport property, offering participants the unique opportunity to run where planes typically take off. In a past edition, it was the sole race held on airport property in Texas. The event also inaugurates the City of Midland’s Fly Into Fall, a public aviation day featuring aircraft displays, aviation professionals, flight simulators, drone activities, airport fire truck demonstrations, classic cars, children's activities, food vendors, and coffee.

Valley Veterans Ride for Heroes

Valley Veterans Ride for Heroes is an annual charity bike ride in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, hosted at Rockbridge Vineyards and organized around support for Boulder Crest Foundation. Riders choose from three road loops of 27, 44, or 64 miles, with the hardest route climbing up to 3,905 feet. The event is easy to reach from I-81 and I-64, making it a practical day trip for riders coming from different parts of the region. The ride raises money for Boulder Crest programs serving combat veterans, military personnel, first responders, and their families, with all proceeds going directly to the foundation. More than $300,000 has already been donated. Rest stops give riders a chance to meet local veterans and hear some of their history, so the day is not just a miles-and-hills challenge. The organizing group comes from 12 VFW Posts in the Shenandoah Valley, and the ride also supports Boulder Crest Retreat in Waynesboro.

The Gypsy Hill Park Firecracker 5K is a July 4 race in Staunton, Virginia, starting and finishing within Gypsy Hill Park. It is Staunton's largest 5K, beginning early before the city's Happy Birthday America parade. The race proceeds rain or shine, timed by Blue Ridge Timing, with results available via text or email shortly after completion. The course is a gently rolling 5K through the park, suitable for those seeking a competitive race within the holiday setting. The field comprises competitive runners vying for overall and age-group awards, alongside local participants enjoying the Fourth of July atmosphere and crowd support. Overall male and female winners receive Hoka running shoes from Sole Focus Running. Awards extend to age groups from 10 and under to 76 and over. Race proceeds benefit the Salvation Army's Pathway of Hope Program, assisting local families toward stability and self-sufficiency.

About cycling & running in Staunton

Staunton-Stuarts Draft Training Notes

Running: 5 miles. Bell's Lane is a popular walking and running segment among locals, and it works for steady Z2 on rolling pavement. Montgomery Hall Park has 148 acres with dirt trails, paved roads, and rolling hills. Betsy Bell & Mary Gray Wilderness Parks bring steep climbs when you want hill work. Staunton Road Runners meet Wednesday evenings at 6pm near Gypsy Hill Park. Excel Rocktown Running meets Saturday at 7:00 AM. The Gypsy Hill Park Firecracker 5k, SAYMCA 8k, and Turkey Trot keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Staunton Perfect Loop 15 Miles is the friendly paved spin, and it rolls 24 km with 255 m of gain through gentle hills along Pleasant View, Galena, and Frog Pond Roads. The route starts at Black Dog Bikes and gets you out toward Augusta County on Springhill Road. The route covers 2 km with 1,877 m of elevation gain. Great North Mountain gives the gravel crossings on Old Parkersburg and Hites Hollow. Little North Mountain brings Troxel Gap. The cycling scene feels route-led, with Valley Veterans Ride for Heroes 2026 as the named anchor ride.

Season: Fall is the cleanest block for both sports, with Fall Foliage 10K & 5K Run and the Six Hour Endurance Run giving runners real targets. Summer keeps things sharp, and Gypsy Hill Park Firecracker 5k lands on July 4 while Summer Sweat 5K & 10K Race hits July 11. Locals keep base miles close to town when the heat builds. Winter shifts the mood after the Turkey Trot Run/Walk on November 26. Runners lean more on paved loops like Gypsy Hill and Bell's Lane. Riders pick shorter paved miles like Staunton Perfect Loop 15 Miles when gravel climbs feel too much.
