Boilermaker Road Race

The Boilermaker Road Race concludes outside the F.X. Matt Brewery in Utica, New York, with its post-race gathering being a significant draw. This is an annual USATF-certified 15K for runners and wheelchair athletes, typically held on the second Sunday in July. The event also features a 5K, a virtual race, and a Health & Wellness Expo. While local recreational runners comprise the majority of participants, the elite field attracts international professionals, creating a dual atmosphere of a community event and a competitive race. The 15K route primarily stays within Utica, extends through New Hartford and Yorkville, and incorporates enough inclines to present approximately 300 feet of elevation gain, a factor during midsummer heat. The race originated in the 1970s during a surge in running popularity, with a modest budget and 800 local participants. Its name references the Utica Radiator Corporation, an early supporter connected to the city's industrial heritage. The wheelchair division was introduced shortly after the inaugural event. Along much of the course, sidewalk gatherings and spontaneous performances occur, leading Runner's World to describe it as “part road race, part festival.”

The Boilermaker's Erie Canal Races (10 Miler, Relay & 5K)

The course starts and finishes on the track at the Ed Wadas Athletic Complex, then follows the pedestrian bridge over Rt. 49 to the Erie Canalway Trail. This event is a tune-up for the Boilermaker. Register early to secure your spot and receive a moisture-wicking t-shirt and a finisher medal. Virtual options are available, with your medal and t-shirt mailed to you. For safety, the course is restricted to registered athletes; strollers are not allowed.

The Boilermaker Shakeout Run

The Boilermaker Shakeout Run is a free Friday-evening fun run starting at The Sneaker Store in New Hartford, New York, close to Utica. The Sneaker Store and New Balance Running organize it between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. EDT. The atmosphere is casual: families are welcome, runners under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and there is no pressure to race. The route follows a relaxed 3-mile loop beginning and ending at The Sneaker Store. Participants have the option to run shorter distances or continue beyond the loop. The first 200 registered runners will receive a Shakeout Run tank from New Balance. New Balance will also provide demo shoes for testing. Goodie bags contain a New Balance coupon code. Following the run, attendees can gather at Grow Brewing Co. for beverages, including non-alcoholic choices, and food from a local food truck.

About cycling & running in Utica-Rome

Utica-Rome Training Notes

Running: Utica-Rome runners get a proper road-race town, not just a few mapped loops. The course runs 20 km with 101 m of gain. Utica RoadRunners keeps the door open with Group Runs, Development Runs, a Travel Team, and the line that there’s a place for every pace. The Boilermaker Road Race started in 1978, and this race put Utica on the map. X. Matt Brewery hands out cold beers at the finish. Proctor Park, the Mohawk River, and the Barge Canal all sit in the local mix.

Cycling: Cyclists in Utica-Rome get their cleanest base miles on the Erie Canalway Trail. The Rome-to-Utica section runs 16 miles and mixes paved trail with older stonedust, so Z2 feels steady but never totally sterile. The route follows the Erie Canal from Fort Stanwix in downtown Rome toward Utica, then finishes at the trailhead off North Genesee Street. Riders pass locks, gates, wooded sections, and small communities, with services in Rome, Oriskany, and Utica. Cyclists looking for climbs should note that the brief gives the bigger gain to mapped running routes, with Mt hope/Fairview - full route climbing +235 m.

Season: Summer owns the loud part of the calendar. The Summer Sizzle lands on Father’s Day in June, and the Boilermaker Road Race brings the big July anchor event. Locals treat that stretch like a real build, with base miles first, intervals later, and all of the training, all of the sweat, all of the pain showing up on race day. The Erie Canalway Trail still works for steady riding in summer, especially when a gran fondo pace is not the point. Winter changes the mood, and the Utica Ugly Sweater 5K gives December runners a low-key target.
