Race Against Racism

Race Against Racism is a 5K in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, run from Musser Park in April and organized by YWCA Lancaster. The day includes separate adult and youth 5K options plus a Kid's Fun Run, so it is built for families, young runners, and regular 5K participants rather than only competitive racers. It goes ahead rain or shine, with same-morning packet pickup, announcements in the park, the kids' race first, the 5K after that, and awards before midday. The race supports YWCA Lancaster's Center for Racial and Gender Equity, and the organizer frames participation as a public statement against racism. Its stated purpose is not just fundraising, but support for work aimed at dismantling racism and changing institutions. The event has run for 28 years and is described by the organizer as the nation's longest-running Race Against Racism, which gives it a longer history than most cause-based local 5Ks.

Firecracker 50

The Firecracker 50 is a 50-mile mountain bike race held annually in Breckenridge, Colorado, on Independence Day. As the original 50-mile MTB race, it precedes Breckenridge's 4th of July parade and holiday festivities, with participants then setting off on local single-track. The rider limit is 750, creating a significant mountain bike event atmosphere without the scale of an unlimited mass start. The course follows a revised route on area trails, featuring aid stations stocked four times per lap. Riders receive practical support at Carter Park, which offers complimentary bike and bag check, a post-race meal, and bike wash as part of the entry fee. The entry package also includes MTB socks and an event shirt, details that align with the race's traditional holiday feel.

Smith's Knob Scramble

Smith's Knob Scramble is a mountain trail race held at Gomez Peak Pavilion in Silver City, New Mexico, within the Gila National Forest. The primary event is a 10K footrace, with a 5K offered for those seeking a shorter run in the same rugged mountain environment. This spring event had one listed edition that was canceled, with refunds offered to participants. The 10K course crosses the Continental Divide, follows the flank of Eighty Mountain, and ascends to the summit of Gomez Peak. The terrain is steep and rocky, distinct from a flat road race given a mountain designation. The 5K is noted as being half as rocky and steep as the 10K. Proceeds from the race benefit the Silver City Farmers' Market, connecting the event to the local agricultural scene.

About cycling & running in Williamsport

Williamsport Training Notes

Running: Locals keep running simple in Williamsport. The main route is a 3-mile paved line along Lycoming Creek, with old railroad bridges and park stops at Heshbon Park, Old Lycoming Park & Baseball Field, Memorial Park, and Elm Park. Lumber Capital Run Club meets at Lumber Capital Athletics every Sunday at noon, with faster runners leading and a volunteer at the back. The group starts around 2 miles and grows toward 4. Anchor race days include Firecracker 5K, Race Against Racism, Cutters 5k, Smith's Knob Scramble, and Muncy Monster Dash 5K.

Cycling: Williamsport Bicycle Club gives the valley a steady riding scene. Locals use the Lycoming Creek Bikeway for easy spins, warmups, and Z2 base miles. Gravel riders go for Hoppestown Road to Cascade Road, Skyline Drive, Dunwoody Rd, Firetower Rd to Little Bear Creek Rd, and Vandyke Rd when they want mixed surfaces. Vandyke Rd runs 2 miles and brings pine forest loam into rounded gravel. The climb is 6 km and gains 1,097 m. 2%.

Season: May, June, July, and August make the best training block here. Summer gives runners and cyclists long daylight, but Williamsport gets very warm and humid, and temperatures exceed 32.2 C on 15 days per year on average. Locals move intervals early, keep easy rides honest, and save the rough gravel for days when the legs can handle line choice. Winter changes both sports fast. January averages -0.6 C, snow reaches about 30 inches per season, and the mix of rain, sleet, snow, heavy snowfall, and icing pushes more Z2 inside or onto clear paved paths.
