Youngstown Ultra Trail Classic

The Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic was a 72-hole women’s professional golf tournament on the LPGA Tour in Prattville, Alabama, northwest of Montgomery. It was played at the Senator Course at Capitol Hill, part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, on a par-72 layout measuring 6,607 yards. The event started with Navistar sponsorship, then returned with Yokohama Tire as title sponsor after a one-season absence, and later moved to a May date near the end of its existence. The golf was often close: Maria Hjorth won the first edition by one shot, Katherine Hull also won by one and set an early scoring record, and the last champion, Ariya Jutanugarn, finished one stroke ahead. Lorena Ochoa won consecutive titles, first in a playoff and then by four shots. The tournament’s notable moment occurred when Lexi Thompson won at age 16, becoming the youngest LPGA winner at the time. Mi Jung Hur later set the tournament record at 267, 21 under par, while the Senator Course itself evolved during the event’s history when its greens were converted from bent grass to Champion Bermuda grass.

4th Annual Bike Belmont

Bike Belmont begins and ends at Wick Park in Youngstown. Riders can select from three route distances: 32 miles to the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport and return, 12 miles through neighborhoods to Churchill Park, or a 5-mile family ride to Goodwill and back. Police escort the shorter 5- and 12-mile routes, making the day suitable for families, casual cyclists, and those less accustomed to group rides. This annual community ride focuses on the Belmont Avenue corridor, with routes designed to showcase local streets, businesses, and neighborhood projects to participants. The event attracts cyclists from Liberty, Youngstown, and surrounding areas, alongside local officials and cycling organizations like Outspoken Wheelmen, CycWard, YoGo Bikeshare, and Cruise the Creek. Local business owners along the route have provided water, snacks, cycling supplies, and support, integrating the ride with the corridor. Post-ride, Wick Park reconvenes as the central location, featuring food trucks, family activities, a marketplace for businesses and community groups, and a preview of Jazz in the Park. Proceeds benefit planning, improvements, bike-friendly infrastructure, and community initiatives on Belmont Avenue.

About cycling & running in Youngstown

Youngstown-Warren Training Notes

Running: Locals run Mill Creek Park first, because we run in one of Ohio’s most beautiful parks. Mill Creek MetroParks gives runners over 15 miles of trails around lake Glacier, lake Cohasset, and lake Newport. The East Golf Hike & Bike Trail is fantastic for steady Z2, and the East Cohasset trail by lake Cohasset stays smooth with new stone. The Old Mill area brings the hills. Youngstown Road Runners Club meets for regular club runs, and Fleet Feet Youngstown runs a free Thursday 6:00 PM 3-4 mile loop. Sole to City, Panerathon, Youngstown Peace Race, and Youngstown Ultra Trail Classic anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Riders use the same park-heavy map, then stretch base miles through Austintown and Belmont Avenue. Bike Belmont starts and ends at Wick Park, with a 32-mile ride to the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, a 12-mile neighborhood ride to Churchill Park, and a 5-mile family-friendly ride. Outspoken Wheelmen, CycWard, YoGo Bikeshare, and Cruise the Creek give the local scene some shape. The Canfield through Austintown bike trail is nice for steady spinning. The climbs sit around Mill Creek Park, especially the Old Mill area, where runners and riders both feel the grade.

Season: Summer keeps the city busy without making the routine complicated. The Struthers 4th of July Parade 5K and Kids Fun Run land in July, and the Falcon Glow Fest 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run hits Austintown in August on a flat and fast course. Locals keep using Mill Creek Park, Austintown park, Wick Park, and Churchill Park for intervals, trail days, and easy Z2. Winter changes the feel, not the habit, with more paved-trail miles, car-free East Cohasset Hike and Bike Trail time, and It's Leg Day 5K in November.
