Triathlon Basel takes place in late August in Basel, centered on the Rhine River. Competitors swim in the river, cycle along its banks, and run beside it. The event features an Olympic-distance race (53 km) and a Sprint race (21.8 km), with relay options for both, allowing individuals to compete solo or form three-person teams to share the swim, bike, and run segments.
The race is designed to be accessible for local residents and newcomers, not exclusively for seasoned triathletes. The swim leg proceeds downstream in the Rhine, reducing the challenge for novices, and the Sprint race is intended for those completing their first triathlon without focusing on speed. Bike regulations also prioritize practicality: city, mountain, and road bikes are permitted, but e-bikes, time-trial bikes, and road bikes with handlebar extensions are not. Participants born in 2010 or earlier are eligible, and the individual Olympic and Sprint races are popular enough to warrant waiting lists.
