Marathon Amersfoort

Marathon Amersfoort is a road running and walking event held in May in Amersfoort, beginning at Amelisweard 125. It is the city’s largest running and walking day, drawing between 6,000 and 7,000 participants annually, with a maximum capacity of 8,000 entries. The route features live bands and DJs, giving the race a town-wide event atmosphere rather than a subdued club run. A significant portion of participants comes from outside the Netherlands, with runners from numerous countries having competed in past editions. Entrants have the option to include a small donation for the Vrienden van Meander “Beweeg je beter” project during registration.

Hooglandse Dorpsloop

The Klaverblad Hooglandse Dorpsloop is a Wednesday evening running event held at the Altis athletics track on Schothorsterlaan in Amersfoort, serving Hoogland and the surrounding Utrecht area. The program includes an officially measured 10 km race, a 7 km option, a performance run, an Altis test run, youth races, and school races for primary-school pupils. The event is entering its 40th edition, giving it the character of a long-running village race. The start and finish are on the Altis track, with longer routes incorporating the track area and nearby green surroundings before returning to the athletics venue. The day attracts club runners seeking a time, recreational runners, children from local schools, and neighborhood spectators. A distinctive part of the program is the scholastic championship for primary schools, for pupils from lower to upper years. There is also a 1.1 km run for adapted sports participants, held alongside the youth run, fitting the event’s broad setup. Electronic timing, changing rooms, showers, first aid, and an AED provide the practical structure of a race day, while the capped field maintains its local scale.

About cycling & running in Amersfoort

Amersfoort Training Notes

Running: Locals keep running simple here: shoes on and go. Rondje Stad is the classic lap, because the route tracks the old city walls and feels right before work or after dinner. Rondje Schothorstpark gives you markings every 100 meters, so intervals stay easy to measure. Soesterduinen carries the longer trail mood, with a 10 km route plus 5 km blue and 3 km yellow options. Amersfoort Run Club meets every Tuesday at 19:15 from Eemplein at about 6:30 min/km. Tante Trail runs women-only trail groups on Saturdays. Marathon Amersfoort is the anchor event.

Cycling: Locals ride out of the old centre and get to green space fast. The Eem River paths suit Z2 base miles and gentle spins. The Royal bicycle route links Baarn, Paleis Soestdijk, the Soesterduinen, and the polder along the Eem. The Around Spakenburg route runs through Arkemheen-Eemland toward Bunschoten-Spakenburg. The Amersfoort Beer Route keeps the social ride local. TC Hoogland sits on the club list if you want a name to start with. The Utrechtse Heuvelrug brings the climbs, and Amerongse berg reaches 69 meters near De Proloog.

Season: Spring and summer feel like the cleanest build for both sports. Locals use the park loops, the dunes, and the Eem paths for steady weeks, then sharpen with Schothorstpark intervals or a harder Heuvelrug ride. Summer keeps the city lively, and Amersfoort still has that neat Olympic footnote from the 1928 Summer Olympics modern pentathlon. Winter changes the rhythm more than the map. Runners stay close to Rondje Stad, Schothorstpark, and marked Beweegrondjes. Riders keep base miles flatter on the Eem River paths, then save the heavier gravel and Heuvelrug work for better days.
