Amsterdam Marathon

The Amsterdam Marathon begins and ends at the Olympic Stadium or nearby Stadionplein, connecting the modern event to the city’s Olympic running legacy. Held annually on the third Sunday of October, the race takes place in and around Amsterdam, organized by Le Champion with TCS as the title sponsor. The primary event is the full marathon, covering 42.195 km. However, the weekend offers more than just the marathon, featuring a half marathon, an 8 km run, and youth races, alongside shorter recreational runs on Saturday. The race's origins trace back to the 1928 Olympic marathon in Amsterdam, which also commenced and concluded at the Olympic Stadium before proceeding through the polder towards Uithoorn and returning along the Amstel River. Amsterdam subsequently hosted the Dutch national marathon championship multiple times. Following a significant hiatus, local athletics clubs revitalized the race. For a time, the start and finish were relocated to Dam Square, but the Olympic Stadium was reinstated as the event's central point. The participants now comprise elite marathoners, half-marathoners, recreational runners, children, and charity participants. World Athletics designates the marathon with its Platinum Label, signifying the highest race status within its framework.

Dam Tot Damloop

The Dam Tot Damloop takes runners from Amsterdam to Zaandam over 10 miles. It begins on Prins Hendrikkade and concludes on Peperstraat in Zaandam’s city center. Le Champion organizes the race on the second-to-last Sunday of September. The modern running event originated as a fun run in the mid-1980s with 4,300 participants. A competitive men’s and women’s race was added soon after, and a business run introduced a workplace-team element. The name derives from the historical concept of racing from the Dam in Amsterdam to the Dam in Zaandam, though the current start and finish points differ from those original locations. The route follows the connection between the two cities, not a loop, and spectators have gathered in large numbers along the course since its inception. Its history is distinctive: an earlier Dam-to-Dam event was held as a lighthearted objection to the inadequate transport link between Amsterdam and Zaandam. Participants could use vehicles and boats then, while local authorities advocated for the Coentunnel. The race evolved into a significant road event, featuring elite runners, mass participation, and a short trial with skaters.

About cycling & running in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Base Miles By Water

Running: Locals run Amsterdam early, when the streets are all yours and the canals feel quiet. Vondelpark handles intervals because the loop is simple and the wind changes fast. Old West gives you a solid four parks route through Westerpark, Erasmuspark, Rembrandtpark, and Vondelpark for 10 to 15 km. The Amstel River gives you the clean long run and carries you up to 20 km when you need Z2. Running Junkies meets Tuesdays at 19:30, Amsterdam Coffee Run hits a different cafe on Saturday, and the TCS Amsterdam Marathon and Dam Tot Damloop are the anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride flat and fast, so base miles come easy once you leave the city centre. Ronde Hoep gives you a classic 36 km polder lap, and Rondje Marken gives you 50 km toward the former island. The Cees Bol route starts in Amsterdam centre and gives gravel riders 120 km when they want a bigger day. Flat Tyre Peloton runs groups from 23-25 to 35+ kph, and Maats cycling group keeps their fun pace under 30 kmh. The climb is 8 km with 150 m altitude.

Season: Spring and Autumn suit both sports best, because the city is quick without feeling cooked. August brings moderately warm days, and the average daily high reaches 22°C while 30°C or higher lands on only 2.5 days on average. Summer runners go early for Vondelpark, the Amstel, or the old city centre, and summer cyclists stretch north, west, or east for longer Z2. Winter keeps the training calendar alive because nights rarely fall below 0°C, though easterly or northeasterly spells can bring frost. Locals switch to steadier miles, shorter loops, and fewer heroic headwind arguments.
