About cycling & running in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester On Foot And Wheels

Running: Locals get their miles in without leaving town. The city centre gives you a tidy 10k circuit to Salford Quays and Media City via Castlefield Canal Basin. Heaton Park gives you paved paths, dirt tracks, woodland trails, and Heaton Park parkrun every Saturday at 9am. The Rochdale Canal towpaths, River Mersey, Dovestone Reservoir, Tandle Hill Country Park, and Alexandra Park keep Z2 honest. Manchester Run Club, Chorlton Runners, Salford Harriers, Swinton Running Club, and Run North West cover everything from social jogs to intervals. The ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon and Simply Health Great Manchester Run are the anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride a proper mix here. The Fallowfield Loop, canal towpaths, NCN 62, NCN 66, routes 6 and 60, the Trans Pennine Trail, and paths around Chorlton Water Park give long car-free stretches. The National Cycling Centre brings track, BMX, and nearby mountain-bike trails into the same orbit. Manchester Wheelers’ Club, ESV Manchester, Bury Clarion Cycling Club, Allez Prestwich Cycling Club, Ramsbottom Mountain Bike Club, The Woollybacks, Breeze Network Bury, Manchester Social Cycling, and Station South keep the scene busy. The Morson Salford Triathlon & Aquabike gives riders an anchor event. The climbs sit east and north, toward Saddleworth, the South Pennines, the West Pennine Moors, and the Peak District.

Season: Spring and autumn suit Manchester best. Locals use those months for base miles, steady commutes, parkrun rhythm, club runs, gravel days, and longer rides before the calendar gets crowded. Summer feels pleasant and slightly warmer than the United Kingdom average, so Media City 5k and 10k nights, canal loops, River Mersey spins, and Dovestone Reservoir laps all work well. Winter stays mild in the built-up areas, and snowfall is not common there. The West Pennine Moors, South Pennines, and Peak District get more snow, so runners keep intervals closer to town and cyclists switch more often to towpaths, Z2, cyclocross mud, or the velodrome.
