Tommy Runs

The Tommy Runs begin at the Tommy War Memorial statue on Terrace Green in Seaham, County Durham, with the sea adjacent to the initial section. Wild Deer organizes the series; its 10K takes place at 9:30 AM the week before Memorial Sunday. It is a straightforward 10K, not a multi-distance event, with the start location listed as SR7 7EU. The course utilizes Seaham’s seafront, incorporating road, paths, promenade, and some trail sections, offering runners varied terrain. The statue, depicting a First World War soldier and created by artist Ray Lonsdale, stands near the Seaham War Memorial. Prior to each run, participants observe a one-minute silence, connecting the race directly to its memorial context.

Lambton Castle Summer Trail Runs

The Lambton Castle Summer Trail Runs are off-road races held within the private grounds of the Lambton Estate, located near Chester-le-Street in County Durham. The series provides 5, 10, and 15 mile options, all starting at 10:00 AM. This allows participants to select a shorter trail run or a longer morning event across varied terrain. The routes incorporate rough trails, firm paths, and cross-country-style fields, deviating from a standard road loop. The primary appeal is the private estate setting, granting runners access to grounds not typically available for training. Past results indicate the event has seen multiple editions with returning participants.

Bottoms Up Cup

The Bottoms Up Cup is a 5k trail run in Princess Anne Park, organised by Washington Running Club. The race is part of the club’s events programme and has raised thousands of pounds for Bloodwise. Washington Running Club is based at Columbia Grange School and draws amateur runners from Washington and the surrounding area. The club has almost 230 members aged 16 and up, trains on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, and its regular running includes hill and sprint sessions plus longer trail runs along the River Wear and past Penshaw Monument. The same club also races in the North East Cross Country League and pays members’ entry fees, so the Bottoms Up Cup comes from a local running scene built around club participation, trails, and charity fundraising.

About cycling & running in Sunderland

Sunderland Training Notes

Running: Sunderland runners usually build loops around the River Wear, Roker, Seaburn, and the city centre parks. Locals use Mowbray Park, Barnes Park, Roker Park, Herrington Country Park, Princess Anne Park, and Silksworth Lakes when they want steady laps or softer ground. Sunderland Strollers and Sunderland Harriers give the scene its club backbone. Silksworth Lakes hosts Sunderland parkrun every Saturday at 9 am. Herrington Country Park lets you cover miles using the different paths without venturing out of the park itself. The riverside is flat with a few little rises. Sunderland City Runs Half Marathon & 10K and the Sunderland Strollers Pier to Pier Race are the anchor events.

Cycling: Sunderland riders get a proper mix from the coast, the Wear, and the roads out west. National Cycle Network Route 1 runs through the area, and the C2C Sea to Sea Cycle Route finishes in Sunderland. The W2W Wear-to-Walney route and the Two-Rivers route add longer base miles when legs need Z2. Sunderland Clarion CC gives the riding scene its roots, and the club says it is the oldest cycling club in the Sunderland area. Members race road, mountain biking, time trialling, track, sportives, triathlon, duathlon, and cyclo-cross. The Active Sunderland BIG Bike Ride is the anchor event, with 5, 12, 20, and 38 mile routes from Beacon of Light. The climbs sit west, around hills, off-road trails, and the Hylton Viaduct area.

Season: June, July, September, October, and November are the best training months in Sunderland. Summer stays cool, so locals lean into coastal path routes around Roker, Seaburn, South Shields, Ryhope, and Seaham without cooking themselves on long runs or rides. July brings the Active Sunderland BIG Bike Ride, so the city has a clear summer target for steady miles. Winter stays mild, but the coast still feels windy, and that gives intervals a bit of bite. November keeps runners switched on with Sunderland 10k November 2026. Locals move more sessions to riverside paths, city streets, parks, and reliable club runs when daylight gets tight.
