About cycling & running in West MidlandsWest Midlands Training Notes
Running: The park has a 5 mile loop. Sutton Park gives locals Europe’s largest urban park, with smooth terrain, trails, and room for Z2 without fuss. COBS keeps things steady with three weekly sessions, including Tuesday coaching at Aston University Woodcock Street Sports Centre at 6:30pm. RunBrumCrew brings the social miles, and RunTalkRun holds a weekly 5k in the Jewellery Quarter. Birmingham Half Marathon, Birmingham Black Country Half Marathon, Race for Life Birmingham, and Grand Union Canal Ultra work as anchor events.
Cycling: The Starley Network has hundreds of miles of linked routes, so you can start base miles in the city and keep going. Canal paths carry locals from Oxley to Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton to Bilston, Coseley to Tipton, Tipton to Smethwick, and Sandwell to Birmingham. Cannon Hill Park works for a circular spin, and Sutton Park does the same for Sutton Coldfield riders. Gravelton Events brings the self-supported side with GPX, TCX, and FIT files, plus a no entry fee, no frills, turn up and ride feel. Lickey Hills, Waseley Hills, and Lemur Hill hold the climbs.
Season: Summer suits the West Midlands best, because long light makes canal miles, park laps, and post-work intervals feel easy to fit in. West Midlands Cycle Hire helps casual riders and visitors, with 1,500 bikes and e-bikes available through the Beryl app. Pedal bikes cost £1 to unlock and 5p per minute, while e-bikes cost £1.50 to unlock and 10p per minute. Winter changes the rhythm, because runners lean into mud, rocky terrain, and January race focus with Not the Roman IX over 12km. Cyclists keep the Z2 honest on canal paths, then point the bike at gravel, bridleways, and cyclocross-style filth.
