Leeds Country Way In A Day

The Leeds Country Way In A Day is a 100K ultra run completing a full loop around Leeds. It begins early in the morning from St John's Community Church in Greengates. The route follows the Leeds Country Way, a long-distance walk of approximately 62 miles, making this an event for those prepared to spend a full day on paths, tracks, and brief road sections, distinct from a typical road race. The course encircles the city, staying within seven miles of Leeds City Square, yet much of it offers a rural feel. Participants navigate public rights of way, such as footpaths and bridleways, passing through nearby towns, villages, parks, and nature reserves, with open vistas towards the West and North Yorkshire countryside.

Rush Around the Rhubarb

Rush Around the Rhubarb is a compact evening multi-terrain race in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, run on tracks and trails surrounding local rhubarb fields. The senior race covers 6k, with junior options of 3.5k for under-15s and 2.5k for under-11s. Children can participate from age 7. Registration takes place at Pudsey Civic Hall. The junior races start first, and the senior field is limited to 150 runners, marking it as a local event rather than a large-scale road race. The route is marked and marshalled. Rules are straightforward: headphones are prohibited unless medically necessary, runners must use their assigned number, and transfers are not permitted. Both club and unaffiliated runners are welcome. Prizes are awarded to the top three in each junior race and to the senior overall podium finishers, with additional prizes for age categories from U23 to V70. The course records indicate it can be contested competitively or run casually; the senior bests stand at 19:43 for men and 23:12 for women.

It is a chip-timed multi-terrain race organized by Horsforth Harriers. Although advertised as a 10K, the actual distance is approximately 11 km. Runners will encounter challenging ascents, balanced by significant downhill stretches. The participant limit is 550, the minimum age is 16, and the race adheres to UKA rules. All finishers receive a memento, and prizes are awarded to the top three open and female runners, as well as vet age-category winners. This race has been held for twenty years, establishing it as a fixture in the local club racing schedule.

About cycling & running in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire Training Notes

Running: Leeds runners get plenty without leaving town. South Leeds Lakers Running Club leans off road, and North Leeds Fell Runners keeps the fell legs honest. Meanwood valley trails suit easy club miles, muddy intervals, and that first Z2 run when the legs are still half asleep. Rothwell Country Park gives South Leeds a proper off-road option. The canal from Thwaite Mills to Lemonroyd Marina runs 7 kilometers and stays pretty flat between the river and the Aire and Calder Navigation. The anchor races include Leeds Country Way Winter Ultra North, Race For Life Bradford, Leeds Country Way In A Day, NorthowRun5 2026, and Leeds 5K Race Series.

Cycling: Cyclists in West Yorkshire get commuter tarmac, canal Z2, and savage climbing in one week. City Connect Cycle Superhighway links Crossgates, Leeds city centre, and Bradford over 14 miles, and locals use it for base miles when the diary is tight. Leeds-Liverpool canal on NCN66 gives a quieter way between Leeds and Bradford, then the waterside route carries on through Saltaire and Bingley. Airedale Olympic CC, Garforth Velo, Seacroft Wheelers, Valley Striders CC, Wetherby Wheelers, and Halifax Imperial Wheelers all give riders a wheel to follow. Shibden Wall north of Halifax brings cobbles, and Cragg Vale drops 965ft in 5.5 miles.

Season: Summer suits West Yorkshire best. South Leeds runners come out of a winter of pounding the tarmac, and the lighter nights mean Meanwood valley trails, Rothwell Country Park, and the Leeds Country Way feel worth the muddy shoes. Canal paths can get muddy around here, but summer may leave you OK in road trainers. Cyclists get longer evenings for the Leeds-Liverpool canal, NCN66 from Brighouse to Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, and moorland roads north of Hebden. Winter pulls runners back to tarmac paths and keeps riders closer to the city centre, the towpaths, and steady Z2 miles.
