Finlandia Marathon

The Finlandia Marathon is a road race in Jyväskylä, Central Finland, taking place annually on the second Saturday of September. Participants can select the full marathon, half marathon, a 10 km Rantaraitti loop, and in some listings a 5 km race, accommodating both marathoners and shorter-distance runners. The course follows Jyväskylä’s Rantaraitti, a lakeside path recognized by Finnish municipal and road authorities as Finland’s most scenic. The marathon course consists of one 42.195 km loop around Jyväsjärvi. The half marathon is a single 21.0975 km loop, beginning at Pohjanlahdentie. This route places runners near the water in a city also situated by Lake Päijänne. The Alvar Aalto Museum is nearby for those staying after the event. Competitors are divided into open categories for men and women, with age groups starting from 40 and progressing in five-year increments. Keski-Suomen Liikunta and Jyväskylän Kenttäurheilijat organize the event.

MTB Marathon Laajavuori

Fenix MTB Marathon Laajavuori is an open cross-country mountain bike event in Jyväskylä, starting at Buugi on Sykeraitti. It takes place in June at noon, offering participants a choice between a relaxed ride on the trails or a timed competition. This is the 21st edition, featuring distances of approximately 17 km for the youngest participants and about 25, 50, or 75 km for other age groups. The course is technically moderate, making the 25 km option suitable for beginners and less frequent riders. Laajavuori presents challenges through its elevation changes, featuring steep climbs and fast descents instead of flat terrain. Age categories range from 10 to 60, with some classes contributing to Finland’s MTB Marathon Cup and Kultainen Kampi series. Jyväskylän Pyöräilyseura JYPS ry, the local cycling club, organizes the event.

Laajavuori Trail Run

Laajavuori Trail Run is an autumn trail-running event in Laajavuori, Jyväskylä, offering two distances: 12 km and 22 km. It is designed for runners seeking genuine forest trails over road running, featuring hills, roots, spruce forests, bog sections, and boardwalks. The shorter route begins later in the morning, suitable for beginners or those preferring a less demanding run, while the longer route targets runners wanting more climbing and technical terrain. The 12 km course winds through spruce forest, crosses boggy areas on duckboards, and includes moderate climbs to remain accessible. The 22 km route incorporates additional elevation, rougher terrain, shaded forest, hills, and softer, wet sections. Participant feedback highlights clear trail markings, efficient aid stations, substantial finish-line food, prize drawings, a shared atmosphere, and nearby hotel amenities, including a spa for post-race use.

About cycling & running in Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä Training Notes

Running: Locals run Rantaraitti when they want clean rhythm, lake air, and easy pacing. The loop runs 7 km around Lake Jyväsjärvi. Finlandia Marathon uses that lakeside line, so it works as the anchor event and a solid check on base miles. Finlandia Five loops 5 km around Lake Jyväsjärvi, and Valon Kymppi gives locals a sharper 10 km hit. Laajavuori trails handle the hillier Z2 days. Muuramatharju's trails suit softer feet and longer forest work. The named club list stays empty for running, so the scene runs through routes, races, and the University of Jyväskylä sports culture.

Cycling: Locals ride the Blue Loops when they want dependable laps around Lake Jyväsjärvi, Lake Palokkajärvi, and Lake Tuomiojärvi. JYPS gives cyclists the club base, with bike tours, trips, training, get-togethers, campaigns, and competitions. Rantaraitti works for recovery spins, while Goblin's Gorge Gravel Loop, Old Church Gravel Loop, and Green Gold Gravel Loop turn the region into a proper gran fondo playground. Lakeland by Cycle Bikepacking routes give riders 1,100 km of touring across the region. Laajavuori, Kanavuori, Harju, and Muuramemen mäkimannut bring the climbing mood. Järvi-Suomi Jyväskylä / Vappusatanen gains 1,262 m over 57.2 km, and Laajislenkki puts 485 m into 35.4 km.

Season: Late May to late September gives Jyväskylä its best training block. Summer keeps the days mild, and the city gets long daylight with white nights and midnight twilight. Locals stretch Z2 rides after work, run intervals on the flat Rantaraitti, and take singletrack or cyclocross legs into Laajavuori when the forest is dry. Lake Tuomiojärvi stays more natural than Lake Jyväsjärvi, and Kuokkala brings open pastures when the legs need quiet. Winter changes the deal fast. Winters stay long, snowy, cold, and dark, and midwinter gives the city only around five hours of daylight.
