Maantiekisat

Maantiekisat centers on the Hoka Maantiejuoksucup, a winter road-running series in Vantaa held from November through spring. Races occur in November, December, February, March, and April. The cup, based in Hakunila, is described by organizers as Finland's largest and fastest winter running series, featuring road races that attract both competitive and regular winter runners. Tikkurila is integrated into the race setup, with the Tikkurilan Vitonen utilizing an officially measured 5 km course known from the Vantaa New Year's Run. The Tikkurila Sports Hall serves as its race center. The March cup race attracted over 350 participants, including 242 in the 10k, and also hosted the South Finnish regional road running championships. Kenttäurheilijat-58 organizes the Tikkurilan Vitonen, and its associated running school is available to runners of all levels.

Saimaa Trail Run

Saimaa Trail Run is a Friday evening trail race held in late August on the Norppapolku trail in Puumala, near Lake Saimaa in eastern Finland. Participants begin near Puumala harbor and can select either the 10 km Elämyslenkki, a single loop, or the 18 km Tuplahaaste, which involves running the same trail twice. The shorter race is designed for both novice trail runners and more seasoned participants, while the longer option presents a distinct endurance challenge. The course features diverse forest trails, incorporating ascents and scenic overlooks of Saimaa. The structure is straightforward: one loop for a shorter run, two loops for a more demanding one. Entry covers a bib, a finisher photo, and access to sauna and showers post-race, offering a distinctly Finnish conclusion to the event. Dinner is available for separate booking, and a Mini Swimrun corporate relay takes place earlier on the same day.

Tornimäki VERTTITONNI

Tornimäki VERTTITONNI is a vertical-kilometer race held on the Tornimäki slopes in Mikkeli, organized by Haukivuoren kisailijat. Participants begin together below the slopes in the early evening. The format involves ascending the ski lift line, descending the banana slope, and repeating this cycle until the full vertical distance is achieved. Poles are prohibited, making it a running challenge focused on uphill and downhill effort rather than a ski-style ascent. The complete race totals 1,000 meters of climbing over 19 laps, covering approximately 10.5 kilometers. Separate categories exist for women and men, with awards for the top finishers in each. The entry fee is modest, but participants must be self-sufficient, managing their own support and insurance. Parking is located before the slope area, not directly at the Tornimäki slopes.

About cycling & running in Mikkeli

Mikkeli Training Notes

Running: Locals run from the city centre toward Urheilupuisto, Lake Saimaa, and the quieter roads near Rantakylä, Moisio-Tuukkala, Anttola, Ristiina, Otava, and Haukivuori. Mikkeli Kilpa-Veikot gives the running scene its serious club feel. Urheilupuisto hosts the start and finish for Mikkeli Running, where runners can choose the marathon, half marathon, 10.55k, or 5k. Mikkeli Juoksu keeps July busy with distances from 10 km to the full marathon. Tornimäki VERTTITONNI sends strong legs uphill on Skimbapolku, and Maantiekisat, Aluekisat, seuracup, and Saimaa Trail Run keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride out on interconnected routes that run from 10 km to over 100 km, so base miles are easy to stack without repeating every turn. Route 62 runs from Mikkeli via Anttola and Lietvesi to Puumala and Ruokolahti, and the hilly and rocky terrain follows the shores of Lake Saimaa. The Puumala archipelago route gives cyclists a proper day out through rural sceneries, villages, and lakeside views. Tornimäki is where the climbs bite, especially when legs already know Skimbapolku from intervals. Mikkeli Kilpa-Veikot, Jukurit, Mikkelin Kampparit, MP, and MiPK give the city a serious sports spine.

Season: July is the best month, and Mikkeli feels made for long Z2 days when the summerhouse crowd fills the lakes. Lake Saimaa shapes the riding and running, and the city’s smaller lakes keep most routes feeling open rather than boxed in. Summer events have seen the heat pamper the athletes, so locals respect the warm days and still show up ready. May and September sit just below 10°C on average, so shoulders of the season feel more like steady work than easy sunshine. Winter changes both sports because Mikkeli has a subarctic climate, and runners and riders adjust the plan instead of forcing summer habits.
