Spassighjata in Bastia

The Spassighjata in Bastia is a 9.5 km urban trail race held in Bastia, Haute-Corse, during the early evening in December. It commemorates Corsica’s Nation Day, observed on December 7, 1735. While its name translates to “stroll” in Corsican, the race demands trail running capabilities, featuring 310 meters of elevation gain. The early darkness in December means runners should carry a headlamp. The course begins and ends at Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, winding through Bastia’s historic center rather than rural landscapes. The event supports a charitable cause, with all proceeds going to INSEME, an organization assisting Corsican residents with medical travel expenses to mainland France. The route proceeds to Place Saint-Nicolas near the port, a square bordered by mature palm trees and featuring a statue of Napoleon. It then enters Bastia’s narrow old-town lanes, passing the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and skirting the harbor’s pleasure craft. The course ascends Montée San Rocuccio to the former Fort Lacroix site, the race's highest point. On the descent, participants pass the municipal theatre before heading back towards the old port and Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. The event draws a large local participation, with over 900 runners in the last edition. Spectators may offer encouragement with shouts of “Aio!”, and the finish includes local Corsican traditions, with Bruccio cheese and Prisuttu cured ham available post-race.

La Cyclo de l'Intérieur

La Cyclo de l'Intérieur is a road cycling stage event based in Erbalunga, on Cap Corse in Haute-Corse. It runs in early May and sends riders around a 598 km single loop with 10,047 metres of climbing. The basic promise is simple: several hard days on the bike, almost all shaped by Corsican hills, inland roads, and long distances rather than flat speed. The related Corsica Cyclo GT 20 format is a five-day ride mixing randonneuring with timed sections. Stages run from Erbalunga to San Fiurenzu, then L'Isula, Portu, Corti, Ghisoni, and Carbini. The event draws about 250 riders, supported by around 50 organisers and 20 motorcycles. Roughly one bike in five is electric-assist, indicating the range of cyclists taking on the route.

Criterium de Biguglia Manche 1

Criterium de Biguglia Manche 1 is a cycling cyclosportive held in Biguglia, Haute-Corse on Corsica. It is scheduled for March, with the exact date to be confirmed. The event is part of the FSGT parcours, not a general touring calendar. The listing indicates a single FSGT route, suggesting a structured amateur road-cycling event rather than a casual ride. Biguglia is located south of Bastia, placing the race in a Corsican setting where local club riders are expected to form the main field.

About cycling & running in Bastia

Bastia Training Notes

Running: Locals run from Place Saint-Nicolas when they want easy Z2 and a clean roll through the city centre. The Old Port and the Citadel keep short intervals close to home. The Saint Joseph district and the Market area give everyday legs a bit of bite before coffee. The Sentier des Douaniers runs north of Bastia along the coast for 19 km, and that trail feels proper coastal. Bastia hosts a 5 km anchor race in early December. Festi'run Bastia and Le Relais Rose - Bastia keep the road crowd honest.

Cycling: Locals ride because Bastia sits between the sea and Serra di Pignu, so flat never lasts long. The city has 223 cycle routes, and most base miles start on the coastal band before turning inland. The shortest route is 5 km, so nobody calls it a lazy spin. One route runs 9 km with 836 m of ascent for a steadier day. Another route covers 3 km and 1,651 m up. Criterium de Biguglia Manche 1, Criterium de Biguglia Manche 2, and La Cyclo de l'Intérieur give the crit crowd targets.

Season: May and August bring the best riding months, and locals use them for long Z2, sharper climbs, and bigger coastal loops. Summer stays dry for two to three months, so runners go early from Place Saint-Nicolas, the Old Port, or the Citadel. Cap Corse stays wilder and less crowded, which makes the Sentier des Douaniers feel better than another town lap. Winter rarely sends the coldest night below freezing, but the Libeccio can blow down the valleys to the sea. The running gets punchier, the riding gets more tactical, and cyclocross legs do not feel wasted.
