Avirun

Avirun transforms Bayonne’s Stade Jean-Dauger, typically the home of Aviron Bayonnais Rugby Pro, into a running finish line for a May race day. The rugby club organizes the event, offering various distances to accommodate different runners: 5 km, 10 km, and a half marathon, with children’s races held within the stadium. The atmosphere leans towards a local sports gathering rather than a formal road-racing competition, with participants exchanging rugby gear for running shoes but still concluding their run on the rugby pitch. All routes commence at the Palais des Sports de Lauga and conclude at Stade Jean-Dauger. They traverse the Floride neighborhood before entering the old center of Bayonne, passing through the moats and the narrow streets of Petit Bayonne and Grand Bayonne. The course incorporates the city’s rugby heritage into the event's appeal: the half marathon distance is likened to running approximately 210 rugby fields consecutively, and spectators are encouraged to generate the energy of a match day. A festive village extends the day's activities post-run, maintaining the communal and celebratory spirit characteristic of Bayonne, similar to the Fêtes de Bayonne.

Foulées du Festayre

White shirts and red scarves define the Foulées du Festayre's appearance before participants depart. This race series takes place in early July in Bayonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France, featuring a 13.9 km trail run and an 11 km walk. The event connects with the Southwest festival atmosphere, and locals consider it practical preparation for the férias. Over 4,000 people participated in the last edition, indicating a large public gathering rather than a small club event. The trail begins on Boulevard du Prince de Galles, passing through Biarritz, Anglet, and Bayonne before concluding at Quai de Lesseps. The course navigates the old port of Biarritz, enters the Chiberta forest in Anglet, and combines coastal, urban, and natural landscapes within a single loop. The 13.9 km run involves 88 m of elevation gain and 88 m of descent, presenting moderate hills. The 11 km walk has distinct start and finish locations, and July weather near Biarritz can bring unexpected rain.

About cycling & running in Bayonne

Bayonne Base Miles

Running: Locals run the Nive greenway when they want steady Z2 without drama. The Nive greenway carries you 13 km from the centre of Bayonne to Ustaritz, and the rhythm stays easy beside the water. Pédros quay works well for a short shakeout along the Adour River. René Gassin public garden gives you a clean link onto the Vélodyssée when legs want more. Aviron Bayonnais anchors the scene, and Avirun brings 5 km, 10 km, and a semi through the heart of Bayonne. Course des remparts de Bayonne and Foulées du Festayre keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride the river first, then point the bike toward the coast or the hills. Bayonne has nearly 40 kilometers of cycle paths, so base miles come easy before work. The Vélodyssée runs toward Biarritz, and the Bayonne to Biarritz route covers 16 km with 108 m up and 95 m down. The Bayonne to Urt circuit gives you a 35-kilometre round trip with a moderate feel. The Bayonne - Villefranque - Ustaritz greenway reaches Ustaritz in about 50 minutes. Aviron Bayonnais, Denek Bat Bayonne Urcuit, and the Nautical Society of Bayonne sit in the local club mix. The real climbs sit south toward the Pre-Pyrenees, Mount Baigura, Iparla ridges, and Jaizkibel.

Season: Spring and autumn suit Bayonne best because the legs get workable temps and fewer winter-style interruptions. Locals use those months for intervals on the flat river lines and longer rides toward Urt or Biarritz. The record low hit 6°C on 4 August 2003. The Atlantic sits 6 km west of the city, and sand running stays a very specific exercise when you add the beaches. Winter averages around 8°C, and short, intense thunderstorms can change a run or ride fast. Locals keep the Pédros quay, Nive greenway, and cycle paths close when the weather turns.
