Les Rives du Doubs

Les Rives du Doubs is a small race series in Besançon, located in the Doubs department of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The city races are designed around the local river setting and heritage. It is typically held at the end of March, offering road running and a walking option. The primary distances are 5 km and 10 km, both run as single loops, with the 10 km being the most popular. Younger participants have their own events: Les Mini Rives is 1.7 km for ages 12 to 15, and children aged 8 to 11 can participate in a 1 km obstacle course. The races take place within Besançon, intended to showcase the city rather than venture into the countryside. The event is modest in scale, with the previous edition attracting just over 200 participants, giving it the feel of a local community race rather than a large regional event. The name references the Doubs river, and nearby Torpes is situated on the right bank of the same river, downstream from Besançon, where the Doubs forms a wide curve.

Trail des forts de Besançon

The Trail des Forts de Besançon is a trail running series held in early May in Besançon, located in the Doubs department of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, the birthplace of Victor Hugo. The event offers various formats for runners: children’s races, a 4.8 km parasport route, an 11 km trail or hike with 330 m of elevation gain, a 17 km duo race with 560 m, a 22 km race with 600 m, a 42 km marathon with 1,300 m, and a 62 km race with approximately 2,400 m that can be completed solo or as a relay. Additionally, there is a 5 km nighttime urban time trial and a two-day "triptyque" challenge covering 38 km and 1,070 m of climbing across three races. The courses navigate Besançon’s varied terrain, including urban areas, the river, wooded hills, and historic military sites. The 11 km route crosses the Citadel of Besançon and follows the Doubs river, while the 22 km route incorporates natural areas near Montfaucon and Morre. The longest route extends from the city's heights into forested hills, passing by historic forts, some of which are part of the area’s UNESCO World Heritage listing. While not high-mountain running, the ascents are significant, particularly on the 42 km and 62 km races. The event provides aid stations, medical support, and a race village featuring concerts and activities, attracting both local trail runners and visitors interested in a race weekend centered on Besançon.

About cycling & running in Besançon

Besançon Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Doubs first, because la Boucle gives you easy base miles without leaving town. The loop runs 5 km between the Doubs quays and the Bois de Chamars. The loop is 54 km with 110 m of gain, Citadelle views, and enough bite for short intervals. TEAM Rrun Besançon meets every Thursday at 7:00 PM in front of the store. Trail des forts de Besançon is the anchor event here. Ekiden Grandes Heures Nature adds the Chaudanne punch.

Cycling: Local riders follow the Doubs when they want Z2 and no drama. Eurovélo 6 gives the clean river line, and the 11-km stretch leading to Avanne-Aveney stays easy enough for anyone. R.ride des forts and La Flèche Bisontine give the local targets when you want something sharper than café miles. The climbs sit around Chaudanne and toward the Jura Mountains to the east. Riders use Assaut de Chaudanne and Double Assaut de Chaudanne when the legs need work. Locals talk less about crit or cyclocross here and more about forts, river roads, and steady gran fondo legs.

Season: July is the warm month, and the city averages 19°C then. Summer keeps the Doubs paths, Chamars Promenade, Jardins de la Gare-d'Eau, and Forest of Chailluz in play for both easy days and longer aerobic work. Locals start earlier when the day gets bright, then keep the evening club rhythm. Winter changes the feel more than the map. January averages 3°C, so runners stay close to the city centre or pick marked routes, and riders lean harder on river Z2 when the climbs feel cold. The trails still sit there, but the forts feel tougher.
